Global Business Initiative
We hope you are having a great summer. Earlier this year, the Global Business Initiative was honored to bring McDonough alumnus and Blackstone's Global Head of Private Equity Joseph Baratta (B'93) back to campus. Baratta, who is also a member of the Global Business Initiative Advisory Board, addressed our graduates during commencement and reminded them that a distinguishing feature of what he defines as '"the Georgetown Factor" is not only a moral anchor but also a competitive advantage in their careers.

Working towards the goal of increasing the global exposure of our undergraduates, this year the Global Business Experience added its fourth location and expanded to India, where students focused on the consumer products industry. Our MBAs also completed another successful international trek to Mexico City.

Stay tuned for the fall as we will host additional installments of the Embassy Series and our Global Business Summit.

Undergraduate Global Business Experience Program Expands to India
This year marked the inaugural offering of the Global Business Experience (GBE) program in India. The global consulting elective course took 19 students to Delhi, India, to study the country's largest private platform for products made from traditional techniques, Fabindia.

In addition to the students who traveled to Delhi, GBE students studied the confectionery industry in Barcelona, Spain, the retail industry in Lille, France, and the wine industry in Mendoza, Argentina.

Vote for Your Favorite Picture: Global Instagram MBA Photo Contest
Evening MBA students displayed their photographic skills by sharing their photos during their GBE trips using #msbglobal on Instagram. The photos spanned four locations (Hong Kong, Israel, Peru, and Spain) and represented a wide range of experiences including their consulting presentations.

MBA Students Provide Recommendations to Uber Based on Research in Mexico
In March, 28 MBA students traveled to Monterrey, Mexico, for their Global Business Experience (GBE). Amanda Lane (MBA’19) and Anuj Mahajan (MBA’19) were among a team of six students who consulted for global transportation technology firm Uber.

“Traveling to Mexico gave us a chance to get to know the concerns of Mexican drivers first-hand,” said Lane. Meeting our clients face to face allowed us to build rapport and gather more information efficiently.”

Alumnus Brings a Truly Italian Pizza Experience to the East Coast

Edouard Freda (B'15), recently launched Talia di Napoli, a company that is reinventing the traditional pizza experience by artisanally handmaking it in Naples, Italy, and bringing it to the United States.

"We started sales in Italy in January 2017, and our Italian consumers have been loving our product," said Freda. "This year, we launched Talia in the United States. We are the only company in the world that can make pizzas this way, and we hope the American consumer will fall in love with this product as much as us."

Blackstone Executive and Alumnus Addressed Georgetown Graduates
Twenty-six years ago, Joseph Baratta (B’93) walked across the Georgetown University commencement stage to receive his diploma and was prepared to begin his career at Morgan Stanley. He never imagined that he would find himself once again on the Healy Lawn stage, this time to address the McDonough School of Business Class of 2019.

“These are the things that will distinguish you beyond your talent and intelligence,” he said. “Don’t forget the ‘Georgetown Factor’ isn’t just a moral anchor, it’s a competitive advantage.”

Summer Internship Spotlight: Homero Soto (MBA'20), Amazon
Homero Soto (MBA'20), originally from Mexico, is currently spending his summer with Amazon in its Finance Leadership Development Program.

"The most interesting thing I have found in Amazon is the confluence between very intelligent people, efficient and lean work, a strong peculiar culture, and willingness to help across teams," said Soto. "Also, I have been very lucky to land in a great team with awesome people. There are many perks of being an 'Amazonian,' and one of them is to work surrounded by dogs — a lot of them!"

Undergraduate All-Female Student Team Wins International Case Competition
A Georgetown undergraduate team won Scotiabank's International Case Competition. The challenge was to address financing in the auto industry, taking into account the prevalence of ride-sharing and the rise of electric and self-driving cars.

“Our team presented a two-pronged solution to cater to the customers and dealerships with whom Scotiabank still has strong partnerships, while mitigating the risk of these upcoming automotive trends by lending more commercially for ride-share fleets,” said team member Samar Ahsan (B’21).

MBA Students Explore Business Ecosystem of Mexico's Capital
In May, a group of Full-time and Evening MBA students traveled to Mexico City. During the five days, students learned about the culture and business environment in this country, which included visits to Citibanamex, Cinepolis, and City Express Hotels, among others.

Student also had the opportunity to explore the rich cultural history of the country with stops at Frida Kahlo Museum and the Pyramids of Teotihuacan. The ITrek was organized by the Latin American Business Association (LABA).
